Cinemagraph Advertising: Pizza Hut Times Square NYC Disruptive Ad Campaign

Cinemagraphs have movement versus still images. They evoke emotions, are eye-catching, even hypnotic. It is impossible not to look at one. The technical part of how cinemagraphs are made is by taking a series of photographs or a video recording. Then, using an image editing software like Adobe After Effects or Flixel, compositing the photographs or the video frames into a seamless loop of sequential frames that creates motion in the image.
“A cinemagraph is worth 1,000 words. “The idea behind cinemagraphs is they are arresting to look at. You can’t take your eyes off them,” shared Michael Grecco, Advertising Photographer who directed and shot the pioneering Pizza Hut Times Square production, which according to Adweek Magazine was the first of its kind in the world.
Pizza Hut created the first ever cinemagraph television commercial. This was an advertising collaboration with truTV, Flixel Studios and Commercial Photographer Michael Grecco. The photography and filming production permitted Times Square at rush hour, a logistical nightmare Grecco’s Creative Team had to solve.
“This shoot was one of the most challenging my team and I have ever done. Definitely a labor of love before, during and after the shoot. Anything disruptive and pioneering always is. The end result was spectacular,” said Grecco.
Grecco has done other commercial photography cinemagraph advertising productions with other national brands for their advertising and marketing campaigns, including the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards that aired on FOX. The Emmy Awards are put on annually by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, honoring the best in prime time television shows, actors and actresses.
When developing new campaigns for advertising, marketing or social media, companies are embracing cinemagraphs due to the lower production costs of this engaging format, at a fraction of the cost of video. The big factor to the bottom line is increased visibility and results. According to HubSpot.com, cinemagraphs are seeing 5X to 9X higher click-through-rates (CTR) in digital advertising and social media campaigns vs. still images alone.
